COMPLICITY | Berliner Gazette Conference 2013

Workshops: 7 & 8 November, 10am6pm [Registration required]
Public Talks: 9 November, 10am8pm [Free admission]

Programme

People who do not fit together, now come together: small and large, young and old – all are thrown into complicity. Here, the 13th annual Berliner Gazette conference senses new possibilities for collaboration. And it sets out to explore them, bringing together capitalists and pirates, hackers and journalists, amateurs and pros.

Three parallel workshops take place on the first two days of the conference: November 7th and 8th. Here we explore concrete possibilities of collaboration as well as future scenarios of working together in fields apart. Finally all workshop groups present their results at the matineé of the Public Talks from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Saturday November 9th.

Amateurs & Pros Workshop | 7–9 November
This workshops explores new trends in cultural production. The problem: More and more amateurs enter the scene (e.g. remix cultures) while professionals remain busy with protecting their traditional role as creators. In order to move beyond the mentality of competition, we ask: What are fruitful ways for collaboration between professionals and amateurs?

Hackers & Journalists Workshop | 7–9 November
This workshop deals with the ‘filtering of relevance’ on the web. The problem: It makes us listen not to people who have something to say, but to people who shout the loudest. In order not to reinforce this mechanism, we ask: How can innovative approaches be turned into tools, that are at once more personalized, democratic, transparent and decentralized than current practices?

Pirates & Capitalists Workshop | 7–9 November
This workshop puts “pirate utopias” of free knowledge and culture to the test. The problem: Either they lack viable business models. Or they are integrated in the business models of ‘free platforms’ of global IT companies being limited by their rules. Against this backdrop we look at the possibility of a digital public library and ask: Is there a third way under today’s market conditions?

Public Talks
The third day of the conference (9 November) is dedicated to the Public Talks. Here lectures and panels address a broader audience by presenting central concepts as well as major phenomena of complicity in the digital era. Starting at 1:30 p.m. with a key note lecture by Prof. Gesa Ziemer the conference establishes a theoretical framework for a series of interventions by experts from Japan, Netherlands, Austria, USA, Romania and Belarus.

Registration: For the Workshops (Nov. 7-8) the fee is 25 Euro. Please chose one of the three workshops above and register before 30 October with a short letter of motivation to bgcon13@supermarkt-berlin.net.

Language: English is the main conference language on all three days. The languages of the Workshops will be mixed according to group preferences.
